annual media summit & Retreat
Images & Voices of Hope (ivoh) is a diverse network of media makers who aim to elevate media as a force for good. We believe the stories we tell create the world we live in and that stories can restore hope and strength to communities. We practice dialogue and reflection to develop our capacity for telling these Restorative Narratives -- a term we coined to describe how people and communities are making a meaningful progression from a place of despair to a place of resilience. We gather in local groups, share stories on the web and social properties, give awards and support training and fellowships.
We also hold an annual media summit and would like to invite you to join us this year. Our summit -- which will be held June 22-25 in the Catskill Mountains of New York -- coincides with a time when people are turning away from the media due to burnout, distrust, questions surrounding facts v. fake news, and more. We aim to create a communal, safe space at the summit where people can come together to share and seek a diversity of ideas about how the media can act as an agent of change and world benefit during this critical moment.
The summit will bring together individuals who are interested in and/or practicing storytelling approaches aimed at strengthening people, communities, and media as a whole -- specifically Restorative Narrative, Solutions Storytelling, Constructive Storytelling, and Peace Storytelling. There has been so much interest in these approaches to storytelling, and yet there's never been an event aimed at bringing together people who practice, believe in, and support this work. The summit will serve this purpose and so much more. We’ll see and hear about frame-shifting work being done by many thoughtful media makers and – more important -- we’ll have space to reflect on the call of this time for us personally. Our summit will begin with a day-long retreat to help attendees reflect on the topics we'll be discussing. Reflections, sunrise yoga, and guided walks in the woods will be offered throughout the weekend for your own personal benefit.
We hope you will join us for this special and unique weekend.
Here are some commonly asked questions about the summit...
When will the summit be held? The summit will be held Thursday morning, June 22, through Sunday morning, June 25. The summit will begin Thursday with a day-long retreat intended to give attendees a chance to decompress, engage in thoughtful dialogue, and reflect on the work they do. It will end with breakfast on Sunday morning. In the coming weeks, we will share more specific details about the schedule. We strongly encourage you to attend the full summit, if you're able to. We recommend arriving the evening of Wednesday, June 21, and leave the morning of Sunday, June 25. If you're driving, we recommend arriving before nighttime, as Peace Village can be difficult to get to at night given its remote location.
How can I register? You can register by clicking here. There is no deadline to register, but we encourage you to register sooner than later.
Where will it be held? The summit will take place at Peace Village in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. As its name would suggest, Peace Village is a beautiful, peaceful retreat center that helps us carry out our goal of providing media practitioners with a chance to disconnect and reflect on the work they do. Peace Village is owned and managed by the Brahma Kumaris, who have been longtime supporters of ivoh’s reflective and international work. Peace Village provides three vegetarian meals a day, plus morning and afternoon tea breaks, and requests that you not bring alcohol or non-vegetarian food on the premises. There is wifi, but because of Peace Village's remoteness, cell phone reception is spotty.
Most rooms at Peace Village are doubles, but we do our best to accommodate attendees who ask for single rooms and grant them on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are also some local B&Bs, if you'd prefer to stay off-site. We recommend Rose Haven Inn, which is just down the street from Peace Village.
How do I get there? You can find transportation details here.
Who will be speaking? We have a stellar lineup of speakers, which you can see here. In place of panels, we will have short talks from speakers followed by thoughtful dialogue among attendees.
How much does it cost? We consider the summit to be our gift to the media community and rely on voluntary contributions to help cover related expenses. If you'd like to pay it forward, we encourage you to make a tax-deductible donation to Images & Voices of Hope. We suggest an amount of $250 to cover the cost of your attendance, although we welcome donations of all amounts. You can make a secure donation via PayPal by visiting ivoh.org/support-us, or mail us a check at the following address: Images & Voices of Hope, c/o Mallary Tenore | PO Box 673 | Round Rock, TX 78680. While at the summit, you're also welcome to make a separate voluntary donation to Peace Village to help cover the cost of your food and lodging.
Who typically attends? The summit attracts media practitioners from a range of fields -- documentary film, photography, journalism, gaming, the arts, poetry, marketing/advertising, and more. It also attracts a fair number of people from academia, as well as individuals who aren't in media but care about its impact on society. Some of the richest conversations happen between those who are in media and those who aren't, so we encourage people from all fields to attend.
Why should I go? The ivoh summit is unlike any other media conference or event. Each year, the summit attracts media professionals from a range of media fields — photography, documentary film, journalism, gaming, marketing/advertising, and the arts. The summit, which places a heavy emphasis on reflection and dialogue, offers attendees a chance to meet people from around the world who share a passion for storytelling and care about the impact that media has on people and communities. Some have called it “inspiring,” “thought-provoking,” and even “life-changing.” You can read more testimonials here.
How long has ivoh held its annual media summit? The summit has been ivoh's signature event since the early 2000s and remains an integral part of ivoh's work and offerings. To get a better sense of our past events, you can read highlights and see photos from our 2016, 2015, and 2014 summits.
How does this event align with Images & Voices of Hope's work and mission? At Images & Voices of Hope (ivoh), we believe that media can create meaningful, positive change in the world. Our global community includes journalists, documentary filmmakers, photographers, gamers, advertisers, and more. Our common thread is the desire to effect positive change through our work in media.
To this end, our mission is to strengthen the role of media as agents of world benefit. We offer support, resources, and insights to media practitioners who want to create meaningful awareness and change through the work that they do.
To us, positive change is about focusing on the world we want to live in or the world we want to create —not only problem solving the world we have. It’s not about glossing difficult truths. It’s about amplifying the best in human nature and whenever possible shining a light on the steps we can take towards the future we want. The summit is one of the key ways that we do this.
